What is Winter Training?
Winter is a vital time for our athletes as we begin preparation for the spring season. We strongly encourage any athlete who is planning on rowing in the spring to participate. If you play basketball, swim, wrestle, or maybe you are doing hockey or club volleyball, those are all great and you should continue doing those sports and join us in the spring!
During this season, athletes are focused on developing strength, power, and endurance. They will be challenged to test their limits, fail, and bounce back with stronger performances that will empower them with new levels of confidence. Athletes should emerge from winter training a greater appreciation for what their minds and bodies can achieve.
Who should do Winter Training?
Any 9th – 12th grade athlete who is not already doing another winter sport and is planning on rowing in the spring. Even if you didn’t row in the fall, you can and should join us for winter training to prepare for the spring racing season.
Winter training provides you with a structured and consistent training plan which will keep you honest, get you in great shape, and provides a competitive and fun workout environment!
Winter Training is only open to athletes planning on rowing for Unionville during the spring season. Because of space and equipment constraints we have to focus our resources on Unionville rowers only.
things to know about winter training for new athletes:
- Winter training is NOT a fitness program for a different spring sport. Please do not sign up for winter if you know you will be doing a different sport in the spring.
- Some of our most successful rowers started rowing for the first time in the spring so if you didn’t row in the fall you can start in the winter, or start in the spring.
- Winter is flexible like the fall in terms of attendance, so miss a day if you need to.

Do we compete in the winter?
Besides plenty of competition between athletes, we compete at Center City Slam! This indoor rowing competition usually takes place the first or second weekend in February at Drexel University. Our athletes have won medals, and we consistently place multiple athletes in the top 10 of categories from Novice to Varsity.
